With an increase in unemployment, the Better Business Bureau serving Louisville, Southern Indiana and Western Kentucky is warning of various scams targeting job hunters.
The scams include some work-at-home opportunities, employers seeking upfront fees for background checks or job training, high salary and benefits for people with little or no work experience and employers asking for social security numbers, bank account information or credit reports.
The BBB also warns job seekers to beware of companies that send checks and ask the recipient to cash the checks and wire a portion of the funds back to the company. The checks typically are bogus, according to the organization.
Job seekers also are cautioned against receiving and mailing suspicious goods, such as electronics or luxury items.People who believe they have encountered a scam can report it to the BBB by calling (800) 388-2222.
